SDS Radical Film Night: Turtles Can Fly

2007/09/21 - 7:30pm

Tacoma SDS presents Radical Film Night each Friday at 7:30 PM at 808 N. Union (across from the University of Puget Sound).

Showing September 21: Turtles Can Fly (2004)

The first film to be made in Iraq since Saddam, this emotionally charged film from Iranian director Bahman Ghobadi shows the Iraqi-Turkish border on the eve of the American invasion. Acted by local children, the story is told from the perspective of a 13 year old boy who leads his friends in cleaning up UN landmines.

The devastation to the land and its inhabitants is revealed in the matter-of-fact perspective of the children and is displayed with every detail of its unbearable nature. The haunting mountains play backdrop to violence and
tragedy, but at the same time the heart and humor of the children is an undeniable force.
