Dear Sisters and Brothers,
I want to invite you to join with labor and our allies in a march
and rally for peace. The International Longshore & Warehouse Union
(ILWU) has called for united labor action on International Workers Day,
May 1, to demand an end to the war in and occupation of Iraq. The
AFL-CIO, the Washington State Labor Council and a host of national and
local unions have long called for an end to this war. The untold
billions being spent on the war could instead be used to address our
domestic needs. It is working people who pay the cost of the war - in
some cases with our lives, but always with our sacrifices. Continued
pursuit of the war will mean tens of thousands of more Iraqi civilians
killed or maimed; here at home, it will mean that we have no funds for
adequate health care, housing and education. And it will also mean
another generation of courageous young men and women who return
physically or emotionally wounded, only to find inadequate veterans'
care, a crippled economy and deteriorating infrastructure.
So it's fitting that this action take place on International Workers
Day. A growing number of Unions and Labor Councils on the west coast
have endorsed the ILWU's call for action. Some Unions in other parts of
the country have called for a symbolic work stoppage of a few minutes to
support the effort.
If you can be in the Seattle area on May Day, please join us - bring
Union or other organizational banners or signs. And please share this
information with everyone you can, so that we can send a powerful
message that working people in the Puget Sound want an end to this war.
There will be similar actions in other major west coast port cities.
If you're not on the west coast, please consider promoting some kind of
activity in your area in solidarity with these actions.
In solidarity,
Seattle Labor Organizer
