Writer and photojournalist David Bacon will speak at King’s Books, 218 St. Helens Avenue, Tacoma at 7pm on Monday, March 10th. Based in Oakland and Berkeley, California, he is an associate editor at Pacific News Service, and writes for TruthOut, The Nation, The American Prospect, The Progressive, and the San Francisco Chronicle, among other publications. He has been a reporter and documentary photographer for 18 years, shooting for many national publications. He has has exhibited his work nationally, and in Mexico, the UK and Germany.

Activist poet David Smith-Ferri, whose newly released book, Battlefield without Borders (Haley’s Publishing), portrays his encounters with Iraqi people and the events that have shaped their lives over the last eight years will appear at King’s Books, 218 St. Helens Ave., Tacoma on Friday, February 29th at 7pm. He will be giving a multimedia presentation, with poetry and slideshow from trips to Iraq and Jordan. Through poetry, stories, and slides, Smith-Ferri will attempt to bring the people he has met into our presence.

New Australian PM Rudd to pull troops out of Iraq by mid-2008

SYDNEY (AFP) — Australian prime minister-elect Kevin Rudd said Friday he would pull the country's 550 combat troops out of Iraq by the middle of next year, marking a significant shift in Canberra's role in the conflict.

Rudd was elected in a landslide on Saturday that ousted veteran conservative prime minister John Howard, a staunch supporter of the US-led war in Iraq and a friend of US President George W. Bush.
