Riot and wrong: the real story behind the Evergreen "Riot"
Posted March 5th, 2008 by AndrewOn Valentine’s Day, Kaylen Williams, a 24-year-old chef, had a bad feeling in his gut all day. He had hoped it was just butterflies in the stomach. The handsome, single man was on his way to a much-anticipated V-Day concert, where plenty of eligible bachelorettes would be dancing to the revolutionary rhythms of Dead Prez, a popular and politically charged underground hip-hop duo that would be making a rare West Coast appearance.
Had Williams known what was to come, he might well have stayed home.

Olympia's V-Day Ruckus
Posted February 15th, 2008 by AndrewAbout 100 people raised a ruckus after Evergreen State College (TESC) police officers arrested a Dead Prez concert goer on alleged assault charges. The event took place around 1 AM (2/15), shortly after Dead Prez finished their set. TESC police officers were called to the show after a fight broke out among 3-5 people in the crowd. The sole arrest was of a black man, although most of the "fighters" were white.

Radical Movie Night - Bellingham SDS's "Present In All That We Do"
Posted January 15th, 2008 by AcumenschIn 1907, more than two hundred South Asian migrant workers in Bellingham were attacked by a mob of white workers. In the course of one night, an entire community was driven from the town - in the approving words of a local paper, "wiped off the map". One hundred years later in 2007, hostility toward immigrants of color in Bellingham continues. Raids and detentions by government immigration agents are ongoing: so are surveillance and harassment from both government agents and groups like the minutemen. How have the events of 1907 shaped Bellingham as we know it in 2007?
