UPDATE: Contagious Disease Outbreak at North West Detention Center

The following is an email exchange with the Pierce County Health Department about the current influenza outbreak at the NWDC:

Mr. Turner,

Thank you for the prompt reply. We are aware of the role of the Public Health Service and understand their difficult task in protecting the health of all that are impacted by this event. A special concern is noted because in prior instances of health situations at the facility (Measles and food-borne illness) a general lack of candor was exhibited by those responsible.

11 Arrested in PMR Freeway Blockades

Protesters are resisting the US Military surge in Afghanistan by blocking Stryker Vehicles bound for the Port of Tacoma for shipment overseas.

May 3, 2009 Tacoma, WA – Activists staged a series of successful direct actions in several locations on the night of May 2, blocking striker vehicles bound for the Port of Tacoma from Fort Lewis. Blockades halted strikers at several points along Interstate 5, and 11 activists were arrested. Demonstrators have pledged to continue resisting the use of the port for war shipments.

PMR takes downtown Tacoma and occupies 9th and Tacoma Ave.

Saturday night, May 2nd, Port Militarization Resistance (PMR) folks gathered at 21st and Pacific Avenue in Downtown Tacoma, successfully taking Pacific Avenue over and marched to the Pierce County Jail where the intersection of 9th and Tacoma Ave was occupied for about 15 minutes by a bad ass Coup sound track. No downtown arrests as of 2:40am.

Monday: Tacoma Cops Steal Joe LaSac

Joe La Sac

Tacoma cops arrested Joe LaSac and his camera just after midnight, August 5th 2008 with a charge of criminal trespassing. Jail support bailed Joe out of jail just before 5am Tuesday morning. Joe was arrested while retreating form a parking lot onto the sidewalk at the Port of Tacoma where Tacoma police were threatening protesters with laser pointer equipped tasers.

His arraignment is this Friday at 1:30 pm.

Forrest Student was tased and arrested at around 7pm at the Port of Tacoma. He is being taken to Pierce County Jail # 253-798-4590. He needs immediate medical attention, vegan food, and is allergic to soy. Please call ASAP!

The Port of Tacoma is being used as a revolving door to send equipment to continue the occupation of Iraq. We say, “No to Continued War Occupation!”

The rally is an effort to build coalitions between existing organizations supporting GI Resistance, Anti-Recruitment, Port Demilitarization and War Resistance. Your involvement is important!

Thursday: Two Arrested at Port of Tacoma

Two activists, K-Tee-O (Katherine Olejnik) and Kelly Beckham, were arrested for crossing a police line at the Port of Tacoma late Thursday night. Both women were thrown to the ground and treated roughly. K-Tee-O was pulled across the line by her hair. They are being held at Pierce County Jail in Tacoma, each on two charges.
